Connectivity Demands Create Opportunity

Delphi expands infotainment possibilities with a comprehensive offering of data connectivity products.

The demand for faster, more powerful data connection systems that allow consumers to stay connected, wherever they are, is continuing to grow. After all, it is exactly those connections that allow people to connect their iPods® and MP3 players to their vehicles' audio systems, connect computers to networks, charge cell phones, check out images stored on photo cards, and of course play video games and watch movies.

By helping manufacturers meet these demands in new and innovative ways, Delphi continues to reaffirm its position as an industry leader in the design and production of data connectivity products suitable for use in a wide range of applications, including vehicles and much more. In fact, Delphi's efforts have been so impressive, it was recently named the sole provider of USB cables, ports, and headers on several vehicle platforms by a major OEM.

"Owning 100 percent of the business to supply these data connectivity systems is not typical," said John Yurtin, Product Line Manager of Delphi Data Connectivity Systems, Delphi Packard Electrical/Electronic Architecture. "In this case, several suppliers were challenged to meet a series of data connectivity specifications for new vehicles. We were able to customize solutions to meet all of them. I think end users will like our innovative ideas and technologies, which also help provide our customers a marketing edge over their competitors."

Delphi's portfolio breadth, strong design and wiring systems integration expertise, and commitment to production quality were all factors in the customer's decision. But one of the attributes that made Delphi an even more attractive option was its willingness to work closely with other suppliers of electronics products to develop appealing products designed to excite drivers and passengers.

"We have communicated with companies that supply other electronics products to this customer to make sure they have the correct headers that connect all the various cables," said Yurtin. "Meeting the customer's tight schedule necessitates that kind of teamwork, and maintaining these close working relationships is crucial."

Moving fast

Delphi High Speed Digital Data (HSDD)
Connectivity Systems

Among Delphi's most notable innovations attracting attention are the High Speed Digital Data (HSDD) Connectivity Systems, which provide high-speed connections with a wide range of consumer electronics equipment, and the three-port USB 2.0 Automotive Hub, which enables the connection of multiple devices to a system.

"The HSDD will be used to enable camera and video feeds in safety applications, including back-up aids and other similar systems," said Yurtin. "The possibilities are virtually limitless."

The HSDD enables convenient data exchange between the latest harness architectures and bus systems. It is ideally suited for automotive connector applications as its continuous shielding and optimized impedance matching protect the integrity of the signal, even in harsh environments.

Delphi Three-port Hub

The three-port hub allows multiple types of consumer products, including SD cards, memory sticks, and more. The three-port hub can be used to connect multiple consumer ports, and can be used with aftermarket USB compatible radios, and can be used to connect other USB compatible devices, such as memory card readers.

"With the increased demand for USB connectivity, it is expected that there will be need for multiple consumer ports in a variety of settings," said Yurtin. "Among the obvious locations are the back seats of vehicles, truck sleeper cabs, and more. The three-port hub fulfills the USB protocol requirement to connect multiple devices."

Like all Delphi data connectivity systems, the HSDD and three-port hub are designed for USB 2.0 protocols and meet USCAR-30 and USB specifications. Further, Delphi's data connectivity products are designed to withstand the vibration, temperature and durability extremes of the transportation industry.

Trendsetter

With its ability to serve as a single source supplier for all data connectivity components in a vehicle, Delphi is able to ensure quality and consistency in a project. That ability is appealing to manufacturers looking to streamline operations. Relying on a single supplier for complete data connectivity systems could be the wave of the future, said Tim Ross, Global Director, Sales & Marketing, Delphi Packard Electrical/Electronic Architecture.

"We may be seeing the beginning of a trend," said Ross. "Securing all of a customer's business for a complete system, including all ports, cables, headers, and assemblies certainly makes it easier on the customer because they can rest assured every component is compatible. As an established supplier of data connectivity systems since 2006, we are capable of handling high-volume production business to supply the right products for the right applications virtually anywhere in the world."

As for what else the future holds, stay tuned.

"We have several innovative ideas under development as part of our next generation of data connectivity products that will enable manufacturers to further expand the types and varieties of data connectivity protocols," said Yurtin. "These products will allow consumers to experience even more capabilities than ever before."
