I just spent a week in Shanghai visiting our team and celebrating the expansion of our facilities in Jingzhou, Hubei Province of China. The pride of our local teams was palpable.
And it got me thinking about China, specifically traffic and pollution. To get from one place to another in Shanghai is not always easy. In fact, their traffic jams have a global reputation for how bad they can be. The rise of the middle class has increased the number of cars and trucks on the roads, which has increased pollution generated by vehicles overall.
China, like the rest of the world, is searching for effective and immediate ways to reduce emissions. Delphi has been working on solutions globally. Until the cost of electric vehicles comes down and a wider-spread charging infrastructure is in place, adoption will not be widespread. But there is a path in the meantime. And that path to electrification is a 48-volt, mild hybrid system. Because of this, we have heard from many major vehicle manufacturers in China… they want 48-volt systems.
What’s also cool? Quite a bit of our technology is being engineered in China. We have an incredible global community of engineers who work together across time zones and borders. And it’s particularly awesome to witness the pride in teams when their global projects bear fruit locally. This was the case in China, as they have created several key pieces of our 48-volt product line.

48-volt mild hybrids, for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, could reduce the percentage of CO2
emissions by 10 percent. With emissions reductions mandates looming in China and elsewhere around the world, this could be an effective way to get there. 48-volt systems offer the best value electrification, which is easily integrated into existing powertrain designs and at a fraction of the cost of high voltage hybrids and electric vehicles.
The best part? 48-volts systems enable performance improvement with the integration of e-booster, which yields – on average – a 25% increase in low-end torque. Additionally, 48V hybrid optimized system performance (EMS vs electrification) can offer an exciting driving performance include seamless launch from stop/start technology.
By 2025, it is predicted that more than one out of every 10 cars sold globally will be a 48-volt, mild hybrid. CO2
emissions could be reduced by more than 10 percent in that fleet. According to Global Insight IHS, more than half of the electric vehicles sold in 2025 will be 48-volt mild hybrids.
An electric future is coming and we know that the path to get there is with 48-volt mild hybrids.
