Delphi Mexico Technical Center Rapid Prototype Laboratory

The Rapid Prototype Laboratory at the Delphi Mexico Technical Center (MTC) offers manufacturers and product designers advanced processes and equipment for the construction of physical models and prototype components from computer aided designs and computer modeling data. Delphi technicians can create accurate and reliable models and prototypes quickly and cost effectively for most automotive and a wide range of non-automotive requirements to help customers reduce their time-to-market and product development costs.

The MTC Rapid Prototype Laboratory team works closely with customers to maintain program confidentiality and our processes are flexible so that the needs of the customer can be met.

The Rapid Prototype Laboratory can work with a wide range of design software and files, such as STL, PAR, PRT, IGES, ETC for UG, CATIA, PRO-E, Solid Works, and more. Our team is fully trained and highly experienced in rapid prototype construction. The team produced more than 12,000 prototypes and 2,200 different part numbers in 2008 — and our methodologies and equipment meet industry standards. The Laboratory has been in operation since 1994.


  • Selective laser sintering (SLS) for development of metallic type and thermoplastic models and product designs
    • Provides true "art to part" in an average of less than four working days
    • Material options include: nylon, glass-filled nylon, sintered metal, and more
    • Sintered metal option also enables in-house production of cavities directly from a three dimensional solid model
    • Size construction up to 13 inches by 15 inches by 16 inches (330 mm x 380 mm x 405 mm)
  • Stereo Lithography (SLA) for resin-based models and injection molded product designs
    • Features an advanced, solid-state laser for accuracy
    • High speed process: construction samples can be available in seven working days
    • 0.003 inch (0.0762 mm) spot laser beam enables high part detail, excellent surface finish, and remarkable accuracy
    • Epoxy resins available in white and crystal clear colors
    • Size construction up to 10 inches by 10 inches by 10 inches (250 mm x 250 mm x 250 mm)

Stereo Lithography: On a layer-by-layer basis starting from the bottom, the laser traces the outside of each layer profile (hatch), then fills in the area between the layers. A UV laser light solidifies the pattern traced on the resin and it adheres to the layer below while the stereo lithography elevator platform descends by a single layer thickness.
