Delphi Mexico Technical Center Fuel Analysis and Testing Laboratory

The Fuel Analysis and Testing Laboratory at the Delphi Mexico Technical Center (MTC) assists component and engine manufacturers in the examination of the chemical composition and properties of selected fuels to help determine their impact on the performance of fuel injection and fuel pump equipment and to predict product tolerances and warranty failure targets.

The Lab offers a wide range of test procedures to analyze the composition and behavior of basic gasoline blends (isooctane-toluene mixtures), ethanol and ethanol-blend fuels, diesel (including EN590), and biodiesel (diesel-methyl ether mixtures).

Delphi's highly trained technicians use industry recognized ASTM International standards and procedures. Delphi ensures complete confidentiality and the laboratory services are conducted to meet cost objectives and customer schedules.

Delphi's MTC Fuel Analysis and Testing Laboratory can assist manufacturers in identifying critical product design tolerances and predict failure through a wide range of procedures, including:

  • Peroxide Determination
    • ASTM D3703 for detection of hydro peroxides
  • Chemical Characterization
    • Conductivity
      • ASTM D2624 to determine the level of static electricity
    • Gum Testing
      • ASTM D381 for fuel properties that cause plugging
    • Sulfur Content
      • ASTM D2622 XRF X-Ray Fluorescence to determine corrosion susceptibility and deposit forming tendency
    • Aromatics, Olefins and Saturates
      • ASTM D1319 FIA Analysis for hydrocarbon composition to enable certification to baseline fuels
    • Acidity
      • ASTM D1613 to determine acid levels below 0.05%
    • Gas Chromatography/Flame Ionization Detector (GCFID) to identify ethanol and methanol content
      • Oxygenated Blends under 20% - ASTM D5599
      • Oxygenated Blends above 20% - ASTM D5501
    • Water Content
      • ASTM D203 to predict potentially harmful water levels
    • Particulate Content
      • ASTM D5452 to measure effects of particulates in fuels on filters
    • Ethanol Content
      • NBR13992, a Brazilian standard to determine effects on components

Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscope determines the presence of gums in fuels.
