Delphi Fiber Optic Distributed Lighting provides high-quality, reliable light transmission in distributed environments traditionally not lit by incandescent sources. This reduces power consumption, improves serviceability, reduces mass and cost, and increases flexibility and reliability.
A fiber optic lighting system provides high-quality, reliable light transmission in distributed environments traditionally not lit by incandescent sources. A specially designed combination of a central light source, connectors, plastic optical fibers, terminals, and other related components provide a robust and cost-effective design for applications where minimal access or harsh environments are an issue, including moisture, corrosion, shock, vibration, and thermal cycling. Included in this application know-how is a plastic optical fiber terminal and termination method, which overcomes ease of connection and transmission degradation problems inherent in existing termination methods.
Initial applications of this technology have included automotive perimeter and ground lighting. Since the individual locations are lit by plastic fibers, the overall system is compact and can be used in locations with extremely small packaging requirements. Using a single light source and plastic fibers to illuminate multiple locations reduces power consumption, improves serviceability, reduces mass and cost, and increases flexibility and reliability.
