Delphi Multec® 20 GDi Fast Single Coil Fuel Injector

The Delphi Multec® 20 GDi Fast Single Coil Fuel Injector is designed for gasoline direct injection engines and features a fast single coil ideal for spray stratified lean combustion applications.  It provides outstanding spray and fuel injection performance at a lower cost than piezo injector technology.  It also features an outwardly opening valve group and is actuated by a solenoid (currently under development).  It will be the next generation high pressure (200 bar) fuel injector.

The Delphi Multec 20 GDi Fast Single Coil Fuel Injector's operating principle is based on an outwardly opening valve group that generates a conical spray pattern. At precisely timed intervals, fuel is injected into the combustion chamber—near the spark plug—when the valve is closed and, thus, enables an optimally stratified mixture plume. The resulting efficiently atomized fuel spray has a superior spray quality (i.e. atomization and penetration), which supports the demands of stratified combustion in order to achieve greater engine operating efficiency.

Benefits

  • Fast single coil design offers a better value compared to piezo technology
  • Spray stratified direct injection features:
    • Significantly reduced fuel consumption versus wall-guided systems and offers a wider range of operation
    • Lower emissions compared to wall guided systems
    • Total drive cycle fuel economy improvements up to 15 – 20% compared to base engines
  • Outwardly opening valve group provides excellent spray stability (cone shape) with robust established recirculation zone and a minimum sensitivity to tip deposit formation
  • 50 V drive with reverse current allows use of an industry-standard driver and enables application of multiple injections with a hydraulic separation of less than 0.2 ms
  • Enhanced linear flow range provides improved stratification capability and is suitable for turbo-charged engines
  • Corrosion resistance, flow performance, and linear range to accommodate the requirements of ethanol fuel blends

Typical Applications

The Delphi Multec 20 GDi Fast Single Coil Fuel Injector can be applied to all gasoline engines, and is particularly suited for larger displacement gasoline engines in which fuel consumption is of greater concern. The large linear flow makes it ideally fitting to even homogeneous turbo-charged applications and the excellent atomization is able to optimally fulfill the needs of future combustion processes such as gasoline homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) or controlled auto-ignition (CAI).

Availability

The Delphi Multec 20 GDi Fast Single Coil Fuel Injector will be available to automotive customers starting in the 2011 calendar year. Contact Delphi for further information.

Performance Advantages

Delphi's single solenoid-actuated Delphi Multec 20 GDi Fast Single Coil Fuel Injector is designed for central mount stratified lean applications and provides a more cost-effective device compared to piezo-actuated injectors. A robust spray cone, with a stable recirculation zone and fast multiple injections, enables an outstanding stratification capability.

Due to the use of conventional solenoid-actuation the driver hardware is basically the same as for homogenous direct injection gasoline applications and therefore the electronic control unit (ECU) can also be used with only minor modifications.
