Delphi Battery Disconnect Safety Device (BDSD)

The Delphi Battery Disconnect Safety Device (BDSD) consists of a specially designed conductor with customer-specific connections. An insulating wedge is actuated by an electrically triggered pressure pulse to cut the conductor quickly and permanently. The actuation is started by an electric signal that triggers the igniter and generates the pressure pyrotechnically.

All system components are integrated in a high strength fiber-reinforced plastic housing.

Typical Applications

The BDSD serves to interrupt electric connections. In case of an emergency, the main power cable in the motor vehicle is disconnected from the battery to help prevent short circuits and the possibility of a resulting fire in the vehicle.

The pressure generator is actuated by the electric signal of the airbag crash sensors.

Product Features

The BDSD meets all common specifications in the automotive industry. The pyrotechnic system used, which is free of heavy metals, is qualified according to national and international standards.

Specific Values

The BDSD is able to disconnect currents of up to 1200 A within less than 1 ms after application of the electric actuator pulse.

  • Operating temperature: -40ºC to 90°C
  • Current for 1 minute: 600 A
  • Continuous current: 300 A
  • Short-term load: 1200 A⁄2sec
  • Total cut-off⁄disconnection: < 1 msec

Electrical Interface

The electrical interface of the integrated pyroelectric pressure pulse generator meets all common standards in the automotive industry:

  • The typical resistance is 2 Ω ± 10%
  • All-Fire at different levels in the range from 0.8 A to 1.75 A, or capacitor actuation
  • No-Fire at different levels in the range from 0.2 A to 0.5 A
  • 11 mm AK-interface
