Delphi Wireless Charging System for Consumer Devices

Delphi is developing a Wireless Charging System for Consumer Devices that will automatically transfer power to mobile electronic devices, providing a convenient and safe wireless energy transfer system. The system will be a product differentiator for advanced technology vehicles and is being developed in cooperation with a wireless energy transfer technology provider. A magnetic field from a source resonator in the vehicle provides power to the devices, enabling in-vehicle, high efficiency device charging that is safe for humans without the hassle of cords or connections.

This hands-free charging technology is based on highly resonant magnetic coupling which transfers electric power over short distances without physical contact. The wireless charging system will include:

  • Capture resonator and interface electronics
  • Stationary source or sources resonator pad
  • Optional repeater coils

Unlike inductive systems, which require precise positioning of devices, this highly resonant magnetic coupling technology allows freedom of positioning for the devices while charging. Since no pad is required, the devices can be charged while being held by a user, in a cup holder, etc. The system will fully charge a device at a rate comparable to most residential plug-in chargers.
